Introductory research of 2 different magazines

Rolling Stone magazine: Denotation: - well known music magazine for people who are interested in rock, pop and similar genres - on the cover we see a medium shot of famous pop star Rihanna - the background is bright and sunny -predominant colours are red, black and white -the magazine follows a conventional style. Connotation: -the way Rihanna is dressed implies that the magazine aims at a more mature audience, -her picture stands out in front of the masthead and a part of it is not visible any more; it is easily recognizable however, due to the fact that the brand is very successful - in the picture she is gazing straight back into the reader's eyes, attracting audience easily. - the font and the layout of the text suggests that it is a serious music magazine. - it is written in a formal, rather impersonal style

Vogue magazine: Denotation: - similar medium shot of Rihanna on the cover -the ocean and the sky at dawn in the background (calming shades of blue) - the predominant colours used are black, white with little brown and red - the magazine also follows a conventional style Connotation: -Rihanna's dress, hair and make-up are classy and elegant, therefore the targeted audience would be middle class women with interest in fashion - the picture once again stands out in front of the well known masthead, but not in front of the text, most of which is written in bold to catch the reader's eye - the layout is elegant and formal and somehow feminine - the mise-en-scene clearly connotes fashion and style -the text is formal but informative
